Nora Jefferson

Nora Jefferson

Nora Jefferson dedicated her life to serving the Benton Harbor community. She made history as the first African American woman elected as a Benton Township Trustee in the 1970s and later as the Township's first African American Supervisor, serving until 2014. In addition to her political leadership, she worked for the school district, inspiring countless students to pursue education, aim high, and give back to their community.

Ora Sanders

She embodied grace, dignity, and confidence, leaving a lasting impact on Benton Harbor Area Schools and the community. As a Golden Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, she was dedicated to service and leadership. Those who knew her experienced a remarkable legacy of excellence, compassion, and unwavering commitment.Ms. Jefferson also worked for the school district, where she took great joy in pouring into the lives of the amazing children and people of this community. She knew the importance of an education, so she encouraged others to always set their standards high, to pursue an education, and to always pay it forward.

Lou Buchanan

Lou Buchanan

Ms. Lou Buchanan is a dedicated community advocate who tirelessly supported Benton Harbor’s youth. From coaching the Bard School Eagles and leading the cheerleaders to organizing 4-H activities and PAL Boxing, she kept children engaged and inspired. She also led a drill team in the Bud Billiken Parade and ensured local youth participated in the Blossomtime Parade. Her commitment extended to the Benton Harbor Pageant and service on the Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education, leaving a lasting legacy of mentorship and leadership.

Leston Alston

Leston Alston was a dedicated educator who brought wisdom, patience, and a genuine passion for learning into every classroom she entered. A proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she exemplified the sorority’s commitment to scholarship, service, and sisterhood. Beyond teaching, Ms. Alston serves as a mentor and role model, encouraging students to reach their full potential. Her legacy of dedication and excellence continues to resonate within the Benton Harbor community.

Mrs. Ealy was a nurturing yet firm economics and social studies teacher who balanced high expectations with genuine care. Affectionately calling her students "mug" at times, she brought positivity to the classroom every day and inspired generations to give their best. A proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, her passion and dedication left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of learning from her.

A powerhouse in the classroom, Barbara Peeples inspired excellence and believed deeply in every child’s potential. As a dedicated science teacher and Olympics of the Mind coach at the Gifted and Talented Academy, she challenged students to think critically, dream big, and reach beyond the limits.

Virginia Abbott-Maxwell

Virginia Abbott-Maxwell

Virginia Abbott-Maxwell has dedicated many years to Benton Harbor Area Schools, serving as a teacher, counselor, assistant principal, principal, and assistant superintendent. Her passion extended beyond the classroom when she co-founded the Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor in 1998. Her lifelong commitment to education and community service was recognized in 2018 when she was honored as Senior Volunteer of the Year, cementing her legacy as a tireless advocate for the Benton Harbor community.

Mrs. Wilhite, a former elementary teacher and guidance counselor at the McCord Renaissance Center, was a passionate supporter of student athletics and a dedicated advocate for every child. She consistently showed up with encouragement and love, making a lasting impact on those she served. A proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, she exemplified grace, service, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting others.
